When Good People Make a Difference
SMDC earns HR Excellence recognition for empowering employees to improve, learn, and help one another grow

Sometimes, a good idea starts with noticing something that could work better.
A process that takes too long. A task that creates unnecessary paperwork. Or simply knowing something that could make a colleague’s work easier
At SM Development Corporation (SMDC), employees are finding more ways to turn those observations and knowledge into action. This approach was recognized at the HR Excellence Awards 2026
Philippines, where SMDC earned Silver for Excellence in HR Innovation for SUSTAINABILITEAM and was named a Finalist for Excellence in Learning and Development for the Good Guys Guild.
The two initiatives are different, but both start with the same thing: people willing to share an idea, take part, and help make things better.
When employees see a better way
SUSTAINABILITEAM encourages employees to look closely at the work they do every day and ask: Can this be done better?
The initiative gives employees an opportunity to identify areas where everyday work can be improved and contribute ideas that can make processes more efficient and sustainable. More importantly, it creates space for employees to look beyond their individual roles and think about how small improvements can benefit the wider organization.
At its heart, SUSTAINABILITEAM reflects a simple idea: meaningful improvement can come from the people who experience the work every day. When employees are encouraged to speak up and contribute, ideas that might otherwise remain observations can become opportunities for positive change.
When what you know can help someone else
The Good Guys Guild takes a different approach to learning.
Rather than looking outside the organization for every training need, the initiative recognizes that valuable knowledge and experience already exist within SMDC. It gives employees an opportunity to share what they know and help their colleagues learn from real experiences and expertise.
For those who step forward to teach, the experience can be just as meaningful as it is for those who learn. Sharing knowledge can build confidence, strengthen communication, and create a greater sense of fulfillment in helping others grow.
In this way, learning becomes more than a formal activity. It becomes something employees can contribute to and build together.
What happens when people step up
In both initiatives, employees are given the chance to do more than simply perform their roles. They can spot an opportunity to improve something, share what they know, or step forward to help a colleague learn.
That can mean finding a better way to get work done. It can mean turning experience into a lesson that someone else can use. And sometimes, it can simply mean being willing to share.
For SMDC, the recognition is a welcome affirmation of what can happen when people are encouraged to take part and help one another. It is also a reminder that positive change does not always begin with a big idea. It can begin with a person who chooses to make something better for others.
