Ganhaan:
A Door to Homeownership, Crafted in Iloilo
Ilonggo artist Filmar Buenafe Denaga gives form to the shared purpose behind the SMDC–Pag-IBIG Fund partnership.

What changes when the door you open is finally your own?
For some families, it means moving closer to work. For others, it means settling near relatives or having a permanent place after years of renting. Getting there takes several decisions—from choosing a community to understanding how to finance the purchase.
That connection between a home and the means to own it is at the center of Ganhaan, a sculpture by Ilonggo artist Filmar Buenafe Denaga. Presented by SM Development Corporation (SMDC) to Pag-IBIG Fund during their symbolic handover ceremony on October 16, 2026, at Molo Mansion in Iloilo City, the artwork gives a familiar goal a locally crafted form.
Named after the Hiligaynon word for “door,” Ganhaan reflects the partnership’s purpose: helping more Filipino families move toward homeownership.
Two roles brought together
The sculpture’s layered, connected forms represent the complementary work of SMDC and Pag-IBIG Fund. SMDC develops homes and communities, while Pag-IBIG Fund provides housing financing pathways for qualified buyers.
For a household planning its next move, these address two related questions: where can we build our future, and how can we afford a home there?
Ganhaan brings these considerations into a doorway-like composition that suggests opportunity and a new beginning. Its hablon detail connects the work to Iloilo’s weaving heritage, giving the piece a distinct link to the region where the handover took place.
As SMDC expands its residential footprint across the Visayas and Mindanao, that local connection gives the artwork relevance beyond the ceremony. It recognizes the place and culture surrounding the communities where families may choose to settle.
A practice that began at home
Denaga’s interest in making things started in Guinobatan, Leganes, Iloilo, where he grew up carving pieces of wood he found around the house.
He did not always know what he wanted to create. He enjoyed working with his hands and seeing what he could make from ordinary material. As he grew older, that interest developed into a desire to pursue wood sculpture more seriously.
Making a living from it, however, required a practical approach. With limited demand for wood sculpture, Denaga studied Business Administration at the University of San Agustin and later worked for different companies. Art remained part of his life, pursued during his free time.
The opportunity to make trophies and recognition pieces eventually gave him a way to earn while continuing to create. Although the work differed from the sculptures he had originally imagined making, it allowed him to develop his skills through actual projects.
Finding his way back to sculpture
As clients began requesting more personalized and creative designs, Denaga found opportunities to experiment. He worked with different materials, particularly wood and metal, and explored forms beyond conventional trophies.
Those commissions gradually brought him back to sculpture. Each project allowed him to apply what he had learned while finding new ways to approach the next piece.
Today, he pursues art as his full-time profession. He continues to make trophies and award pieces alongside projects that give him room to explore his creativity further.
Looking back on his experience, Denaga credits the different stages of his working life with helping him grow. The satisfaction of creating with his own hands has remained a constant.
Local artistry, a shared goal
Ganhaan brings Denaga’s practice into a story about homes, financing and the families making plans for their future. Its local craftsmanship gives the partnership a connection to Iloilo, while its meaning speaks to an aspiration shared by households across the country.
The artwork marked the collaboration at Molo Mansion. The work it represents continues through developing communities, providing financing options for qualified buyers and helping families understand their next steps toward owning a home.
